Discover the Charente !

The Charente area of France has been welcoming people from all over the world for centuries. Its geographical location in the Southwest of France has meant that from very early on in its history it has been used as an economic gateway between Paris and Spain as well as central Europe and the Atlantic coast.

Even though the agricultural and farming activities of the area are very much in evidence, the Charente has as many cultural activities on offer as its neighbours and these festivals have gained an international reputation over the years.

With its mild climate the Charente offers a warm welcome to those wanting to relax as well as many leisure activities.

The Charente is known primarily for its vineyards and the charm of the little riverside villages tucked away alongside the beautiful Charente river. This area is a haven of peace and one of France's best kept secrets. Although tourism is not a vital element for the local economy, accommodation can be found for visitors so that they can discover the area's hidden treasures at leisure by wandering around the countryside and villages that are all filled with history.

The variety and richness of the many touristic and historic sites can be appreciated by foot, on horseback, by bicycle, or perhaps more energetically by canoeing down the Charente river.
